Lilly Cole to Launch a Thousand Ships

Supermodel cast to play Helen in The Last Days of Troy

Lilly Cole, the actress and supermodel who has worked for the likes of Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Prada and Jean Paul Gaultier, among others, and who has been featured on the covers of the world’s most glamorous magazines, has been cast as the most beautiful woman in history, as Nick Bagnall directs The Last Days of Troy. Inspired by Homer’s Iliad, it is a reimagining of events as the Trojan War drew towards its epic finale.

Lilly Cole is to play Helen, the wife of Menelaus who is the King of Sparta and brother of the most powerful of the Greek kings, Agamemnon. When she is spirited away (or abducted, depending on whether you share the Trojan or Greek point of view) by Paris, son of the King of Troy, it sparked a siege that is said to have lasted ten years. It only ended, in disaster for the Trojans, when the Greeks left a huge wooden horse as an apparent tribute and seemingly sailed away. What the city-dwellers, who brought the trophy in through the gates, didn’t know was that it was full of enemy soldiers. Hence the saying: “Beware of Greeks bearing gifts!”

The Last Days of Troy will be staged at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre this coming June.
