Abigail's Party, when the new production opens this March at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London from Lindsay Posner will star Jill Halfpenny.
Abigail's Party could be described as Oscar-winner Mike Leigh's most-loved play, and will feature at the Menier Chocolate Factory from March 2nd. The play, set in suburbia in the1970's, premiered in 1977 at the Hampstead theatre to huge critical acclaim with the original cast, which included Alison Steadman, who later starred in the BBC's hugely-successful TV adaptation.
A comedy of manners with more than a large slice of black humour, Abigail's Party centres on Beverly and her husband Laurence who are hosting a drinks party for their neighbours. There is plenty of booze, an array of cheese-pineapple savoury bites, olives and even a Demis Roussos LP on the record player. But as prejudices begin to unmask and tempers flare, the evening starts to resemble a train wreck which can only end one way....in disaster!
Jill Halfpenny is best known for her long-running role in BBC soap EastEnders and, more recently Waterloo Road, but earned her west end stripes for her recent role in Legally Blonde The Musical which saw her take home the Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Musical.
When she left the Eastenders, Halfpenny joined the cast of Chicago The Musical at the Cambridge Theatre before starring in the West End run of the play Calendar Girls. The actress's other screen credits include Shameless, Wild At Heart, and Coronation Street.
Posner proved his west end comedy directing credentials this Christmas with his critically-acclaimed production of Noises Off at the Old Vic with his other credits including Butley at the Duchess Theatre, An Ideal Husband at the Vaudeville as well as A View From The Bridge at the Duke of York's.
